The Clearflo Story…
A Visionary's Journey: Revolutionizing Water Access for Indigenous Communities Worldwide
The story of Clearflo Solutions begins not in a lab or a corporate boardroom, but deep within the jungles of South America. Kevin Haughton, the founder of Clearflo, was in Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest, working on an unrelated project with Indigenous communities when he witnessed a life-altering truth. This which was not unfamiliar as he was aware of the sustained crisis among Indigenous communities back home. In the midst of a beautiful, vibrant ecosystem, he saw the harsh reality of water scarcity, or water that was often tainted or altogether absent. He quickly realized that this wasn’t just a regional issue; it was a global crisis. Whether in remote villages of the Amazon, Canada, or even urban centers, the lack of access to safe, clean water was pervasive.
Kevin’s roots lay in Canada, on the Unceded ancestral lands of the K’òmoks First Nation in British Columbia’s Comox Valley. Growing up in close proximity to his own Indigenous community, he had long understood the devastating effects of inadequate water infrastructure. The tragedy of contaminated water in Indigenous communities, both in Canada and around the world, was a personal concern for him, one that he could not ignore.
As he traveled across the globe, Kevin’s eyes were opened to the widespread nature of the problem. 2.2 billion people do not have safely managed water services, and a further 4.2 billion people are without safely managed sanitation services. He studied water treatment technologies that existed, hoping to find a viable solution but everywhere he looked, something was missing. The most glaring challenge was that many of the world’s most underserved communities were in remote, off-grid areas. The harsh terrain and lack of reliable power sources made conventional water treatment systems unfeasible. The need was clear: a new kind of water treatment technology was needed—one that could operate on renewable energy, be highly efficient, and be fully autonomous.
This insight set Kevin on a path that would span continents and change the course of his life.
A Dream, Then a Setback
What followed was a blend of innovation, failure, and perseverance. Kevin’s journey took an unexpected turn when he was asked to join forces as the Chief Technical Officer of a newly formed, water treatment company based in the Republic of Panama. He was asked to bring his insights and research to the group as his experience in extreme remote locales, and the developmental strides he had made were potent. Coupled with his experience in extreme remote regions of the globe it was the right path! All of this seemed perfect as it was a platform for Kevin to work alongside others that shared the common goal of providing safe, clean water. It served as a place to grow and see his ideas burgeon alongside others!
A company colleague introduced him to a water treatment system developed by a US-based environmental water technician, which was supposedly designed to meet the needs of remote communities. Kevin and his team were eager to test the system and implement it and his focus shifted from his own ideas to the arrival of the technology, which was met with excitement and hope, until reality set in. The system failed to perform as promised. Worse, it was then that Kevin discovered that the US company behind it had a history of turmoil with was in the midst of collapsing as a result of the false promises behind a system that would not work.
Despite numerous warnings from others, who cautioned Kevin to distance himself, he remained on course. The media worldwide was filling up with reports about this US man and his deceptive tactics, and this public company was being dismantled. There still remains, numerous public investor forums and articles that explain all of it in excruciating detail. Kevin's unwavering determination clouded the doubts his intuition had been raising from the very beginning. The US company owner (coincidently also named Kevin), and others that had invested heavily in it, were convincing figures that continued to urge him to push forward, further drowning out the inner voice that told him to walk away. They saw the potential in Haughton being the one that could turn this all around and actually bring some positivity to the dark cloud in two ways: actually deploy a system of the US design and work the problems out, ensure it worked, therefore saving the millions of dollars invested by those duped like Haughton and his colleagues.. Haughton remained committed, driven by the potential to provide clean water to many. He put aside his growing concerns and traveled to Asia, determined to help set up yet another U.S. designed system. However, this system, much to his dismay, was impossibly unsuited for the environment and struggled even more to operate consistently for more than a day. It ultimately failed to meet even the most basic drinking water standards.
The dream of bringing clean water to these communities seemed to unravel before his eyes.
However, where others might have seen this as the end of the road, Kevin saw it as an opportunity, a challenge to build something even better. To innovate on the failings he had witnessed and create a system and prove his concept! In the face of this setback, he made a vow to the community that he would return, this time with a working solution. He would design his own system, one that would truly make a difference. He would use the experience as a model of 'what not to do' and focus on the key scientific areas the US company was simply unable to make sense of. He instead, would learn it all and do it right!
Designing a Future of Clean Water
Kevin’s vision of a sustainable, reliable water treatment system became a personal mission. He continued to dive headfirst into learning everything he did not already know about water treatment technologies, chemistry, filtration, engineering, and automation. Every lesson he learned, every failure he encountered, brought him closer to the solution. He knew that the system he envisioned would have to meet several key criteria: it would need to be able to filter large volumes of water every day, operate in the harshest environments from tropical heat to freezing temperatures, and do so at an affordable, sustainable cost. It also needed to be easy to use and maintain, empowering communities rather than relying on outside experts.
For months, Kevin sketched designs, filled notebooks, and refined his vision. He poured his soul into the project, drawing inspiration from everything around him-the natural world, his upbringing, and the teachings of his father. This was not just a technological challenge; it was a call to create something that could change the world. Just as his Father said: "if you discover something important, you need to share it with the world"
The Birth of the Mobilpur System
As Kevin’s working design took shape, it attracted attention from international partners, including a group in Asia that had previously invested a great deal of money into the US company recognized the potential of his honest and tangible work. They did not want a repeat of the US company, and flew Haughton over for a face to face meeting. After an intensive scientific review of his plans and data points, they formed a team with him immediately and with it, friendships to last a lifetime.
Most all of the components were sourced from North America and shipped to Asia for final assembly. This prototype was constructed in record time with Kevin's team of Chinese engineers and himself only. The proof of concept was a success and it was certified for use through one of the most stringent processes. The collaborative effort between North American and Asian teams was driven not by profit margins but by a shared goal - to help solve the world water crisis.
Construction of the system began in October 2017, and after countless iterations, redesigns, and refinements, the system was completed in March 2018. This groundbreaking water treatment system, called Mobilpur, was designed to be mobile, scalable, and capable of providing safe, clean water to remote communities in a way that was both sustainable and cost-effective. When it was first deployed, the system garnered global recognition for its potential to address water scarcity in the most underserved regions of the world.
But as political tensions and trade restrictions began to escalate, Kevin’s partnership in Asia was disrupted. The path forward was no longer clear in Asia, so he made the decision to return to Canada and continue the mission closer to home which brings him full circle and ultimately back to his initial mandate of helping Indigenous communities where he grew up.
A New Beginning, A Global Impact
Today, Clearflo Solutions Inc. is firmly rooted in Canada, with a team that is dedicated to revolutionizing water access worldwide. Manufacturing takes place on the ancestral lands of the K’òmoks First Nation in British Columbia, the home of Clearflo’s headquarters More than ever, the mission remains the same: to provide safe, clean water to those who need it most. Kevin is compelled by an inherent desire to help others and alongside of him stand his Family, wife Brodie, and Daughters Emily and Taylor.
The Mobilpur system has continued to evolve, incorporating new technological advancements and innovations to meet the ever-changing challenges of water treatment. What is clear is, one specific process of treatment does not work for all sources of water. wqClearflo’s commitment to social impact has only grown stronger with time. The team is actively deploying systems in Indigenous communities across Canada, where the need for clean water remains a critical issue.
Kevin’s journey-from the jungles of South America to the communities of Turtle Island, has been one of resilience, invention, and an unwavering commitment to a better future for all. What began as a dream of bringing clean water to remote communities has become a global movement, powered by innovation, collaboration, and a relentless dedication to social impact. Kevin Haughton’s vision is now shaping a future where safe, clean water is no longer a privilege for the few, but a basic right for all.
